Dear Young Folks: From Critic to Builder — A Lesson for Young Changemakers
Dear Young Folks, For years, I was vocal, consistently critiquing the media structure at 3SC and insisting it could be better. I even openly disagreed with the gentleman in the photo for personally funding a players’ unveiling in a particular season without leveraging local creative resources. At the time, I believed strongly that we could build capacity from within, and I said so loudly. Then in March 2024, I received a call that humbled me. The message was direct: “You do more talking than doing.” It was uncomfortable because, in part, it was true. Not that I hadn’t tried to demonstrate possibilities before, but resistance to collaboration and volunteering from those in leadership often made it easier to remain a critic than to become an executor. So we chose to execute. From the first photo, the first reel, the first graphic, eventually growing into over 2,000 creative outputs during the 2024/25 season, we shifted from commentary to contribution. We pitched relentlessly within and outside the state. We knocked on doors, engaged partners online and offline, sought donors, built systems, and kept the vision alive. The work was not glamorous. It was demanding. But it was necessary. In challenging the system, change began to happen. Clearer boundaries were defined. 3SCFansTV was steered firmly toward its core mandate, the fans’ perspective. What started as agitation evolved into a movement. And in that process, we too were forced to grow, adapt, professionalize, and refine our operations. Personally, the journey has been transformative. I have grown from that young boy hawking jerseys in the stadium to someone walking into corporate spaces and handling official communications, largely because I chose to build, to learn, and to accept mentorship and leadership opportunities that came with the responsibility of doing. When I look in the mirror now, I see growth. I see refinement earned through action. Idris Animasaun
